About IEFS

The International External Fixation Symposium (IEFS) presented by the University of Texas Health San Antonio Long School of Medicine was founded by Thomas Zgonis, DPM, FACFAS, in 2005.  Over the years, participants from around the world have taken part in this unique event focused on diabetic foot and ankle surgery, with lectures from national and internationally renowned physicians and surgeons, interactive panel discussions, abstract competitions, and hands-on training in cadaveric workshops for internal and external fixation, flap dissection, and intramedullary nailing.  Featured collaborations have included the Diabetic Foot Society of India (DFSI) and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).  Each year, the IEFS honors a surgeon as the recipient of the Ilizarov Award of Excellence which recognizes the individual’s distinguished surgical and academic contributions in external fixation for the lower extremity.  IEFS has united the world over the years by bringing together 32 countries for unparalleled surgical training on the diabetic foot and ankle.
